The Homestead School is currently closed, following a critical Ofsted report. Pupils left at the end of the Summer Term 2008. The buildings are owned by Essex County council and continue to be maintained. One option for the site, is re-opening as a Special School in a couple of year's time.

In 1943 the Home Office bought The Oaks and re-opened the building as an approved school for boys under 13 sent from the juvenile courts. They had either committed an offence or needed specialised attention. The school was under the management of the Society of Friends. There were small classes allowing extra attention to individuals. The boys attended lessons, carried out the daily chores, participated in games and learnt practical skills. The school proved very successful with only a small proportion of children offending after leaving the care of the school. Despite its success the Home Office closed the school in 1956. Later in the same year Essex County Council reopened the school, now known as Homestead School, for "socially maladjusted boys" aged 11 to 16 years. The Homestead School today is an EBD School for those with Special Educational Needs and offers boarding and day education for boys from the whole of Essex.
