Looking toward the south-west, with Dedham off to the right. the main channel of the Stour lies in the centre of the flooded area, one looped willow trunk being a good marker.

The view upstream from Flatford Bridge; the river at precisely bankfull-discharge. Upstream the meadows are covered as the river overflows a low point on the south side... once the focus of a task by East Bergholt High School Conservation Volunteers! Later a more substantial repair was carried out using dumper trucks!

High levels of water on both sides of the weir at Flatford Mill. The buildings are now occupied by the Field Studies Council as a fieldwork centre.

At Langham, flooding is localised, but because of the very flat nature of the land, drainage is slow and easily interrupted. Blockages, like this one on Langham Lane, can keep quite large areas under water.

February 2002 Floods

The view across the meadows from the A12. The underpass opposite the Talbooth  restaurant allows access to this area, along an elevated concrete footway. The river is on the right of the picture.

A close shot of the overflowing river. The area of green is slightly higher than the flood plain behind, which is flooded. This is a natural levee, and is only seen clearly in flood conditions.

The blockage of Black Brook at the road crossing has backed water up for several years, rendering woodland into a bayou!

The bridge has often been a ford!

The overflow makes its way over the road bed and erodes the bridges approaches.

The left and right hand shots show the flooding to the east of the A12 embankment, accessed by a concrete tunnel (with a footway at a higher level). The levee features of the flood plain are submerged, but still show through the riverbank vegetation lines. The centre shot is at Stratford weir, showing the portage ramp between river channels - scarcely needed on this day!
