The Langham Good Companions Club was started in June 1961 after a meeting with the Essex Old People's Welfare Secretary, who contributed £15 to get the Club started. The initial subscription was 3d. The club started life as the 'Over 60s' Club but the name was changed,in 1997, to the 'Good Companions' Club, for members 55 yrs and over.
At the first meeting in July 1961 there were 32 members. There are presently over 40 members.
The club offers a venue for the over 55s to meet once a month to enjoy organised events as well as a chat over a cup of tea in a relaxed atmosphere.
The club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Langham Community Centre, 2.30pm-4.30pm. The times are altered through the year to accommodate the dark evenings, ensuring that people can get home in some light.
Events include:
Outings during the summer months, such as : Visiting gardens A bring and buy raffle to raise funds for outings
The Club tries to cater for all persons, whether fit or disabled. Non-drivers are picked up by other members to enable them to attend all the meetings and outings they wish to. |
